Minor flooding in Washington County; flash flood watch for much of Utah
There are reports of flooding in the Dameron and Diamond valleys, as well as parts of Zion National Park from storms that moved over the area late Monday. The heavy rains caused culverts and creek beds to spill over, but nothing more, authorities said.
"There was no damage that we're aware of to any structures and property," Washington County Sheriff Kirk Smith said today.
In Zion National Park, flash flooding hit the popular Subway hiking area. Most groups were out before any flooding occurred, said park spokesman Ron Terry.
"There was one group that had not emerged from the flash flooding," he said this morning.
They had to go for higher ground, but came out of the area on their own about 9:15 p.m. Monday.
The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for most of southern and central Utah through tonight, as thunderstorms with heavy rain move across the area. The weather service urges anyone planning to be outdoors to be extra cautious and avoid flood-prone areas.
In northern Utah, storms will be moving across the area today bringing with it a chance for rain showers along the Wasatch Front.
