PROVO — In celebration of the release of the new version of Monopoly, fans at Brigham Young University, as well as those worldwide, will unite Wednesday in an attempt to set a world record for the most people ever playing the board game at the same time.

Participants must meet at 7:30 a.m. on the BYU campus in the area designated as "Wilk Way," between the campus library and bookstore, to receive instructions and prepare to begin playing at 8 a.m. Games will last until 9 a.m., and the first 100 people to arrive will receive a free T-shirt commemorating the event. Doughnuts will be served and 40 Monopoly games will also be given away as door prizes.

The world-record attempt will take place not only in Provo, but also in other cities around the world including Las Vegas, Atlantic City (home of Monopoly), London, Madrid and Tokyo. To officially be counted by Guiness toward the world record, players must play the game at BYU in the designated area between the library and the bookstore, and must play during the 8-9 a.m. time period. BYU's chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America is sponsoring the school's participation in the event.
