Texas schools allowed to waive lost days to Ike
HOUSTON (AP) The Texas Education Agency is not requiring schools that closed after Hurricane Ike to make up all the time that students missed.
State Education Commissioner Robert Scott said districts affected by Ike can waive 10 days of the mandatory 180-day school year.
The districts still can opt to make up the lost days. The Houston Chronicle reported online Wednesday that some districts have indicated they plan to do so.
About one in six Texas school districts and charter schools was affected by Ike.
Houston Independent School District has a meeting Thursday to make its decision. Schools in that district were closed between seven and 11 days.
