Laying Down Blocks? | 8:00 a.m. Aug. 26, 2008
We have had some great BYU TEs. It seems though that they tend to be great receivers but struggle in the blocking game - especially at the next level. Even solid NFL players like Lewis and Mili were not considered great in the trenches. It sounds like Friel may be an exception like Dan Coats. The fact that Coats can block is why he is still with the Bengals. He is also being worked out at FB. The ability to play both TE and FB is valuable in the NFL. Friel is getting a jump on both. The inabiity to get physical was the reason otherwise great receiving TEs like Harline and Smith didn't even make it out of an NFL camp and Jolley fizzled. Hopefully Pitta and George are working hard on both aspects as well. I'd love to see the BYU NFL TE train continue.
Turncoat? | 8:48 a.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Come on Harmon, I know that you're just trying to make interesting writing and make a point about So'oto switching sides of the ball, but calling him a turncoat is a bad choice of words. It is implying that he deserted one party to join the other. From everything that I've heard and read, he didn't desert anyone, he switched to linebacker, a position he play very well in high school, because it more adequately utilized his speed and athleticism and got him on the field more. If you're trying to say that he switched positions, just say it and don't overwrite.

I think Harmon just meant to add some humor with the term "turncoat". So'oto's move to linebacker benefits the Cougs and So'oto (starting linebacker versus 3rd string TE = much more value) so I highly doubt Harmon meant to criticize it. Maybe Harmon has been around the players too much - I'm guessing they use that kind of language to give So'oto a hard time all in fun. I'm starting to think someone should do a study on the percentage of english professors among the LDS population.

That's pretty funny. I am an English Professor and I immediately recognized Harmon's language for humor. Perhaps it's ironic coming from me, but I always laugh at how uptight bloggers get about language. Turncoat, do you really think Harmon did harm with this?
Puh-lease | 10:51 a.m. Aug. 26, 2008
"Turncoat" - lighten up. It was a joke. I'm sure the offense has called So'oto a turncoat in jest. Give Harmon a break.
RE TED | 10:57 a.m. Aug. 26, 2008
Ted:
I can tell you are a highly educated ute.

--"Laying Down Blocks": Did you see the practice? Why be critical? Harmon is simply making the point that he is performing close to the other ends. He didn't assert that he was an all-time "great" blocker. He is Frosh and apparently making some difference in the program.

--"Turncoat": It was tongue in cheek. The coaches asked him to switch. Obviously Dick is not literally calling him a turncoat. It just jest surrounding the typical good hearted rivalry between O and D. Your response is an overwrite. I totally agree with "Humor".

--"Ted": You are a Ute plant. Meaningless comment.

Thanks Dick | 1:48 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
I enjoyed the article. It is always nice to get some more insightful info regarding the cougar team and players that you won't read elsewhere.
