Manic depression? | 4:22 p.m. Aug. 26, 2008
I have a now 33 year old son who went through some of the same behavior as a teenager, although not quite as extreme. He even jumped out of our van once when I refused to buy cigarettes for him. He was 16 at the time, I think. Eventually we found out that he was suffering from manic depression (bipolar disorder--it has several names). He took medication for it for some years, and that helped very much. He also took some anger management classes, which also helped. Just a thought regarding this young man. It can be very scary for parents when they are afraid of their own children.

A pampered kid .... | 3:03 p.m. Aug. 27, 2008
and finally was told no? I'm sure the tantrums didn't just start that day. Why was he let get away with it? My kids threw a temper tantrum just once. After that and our discussion, they knew it was totally inappropriate and that they would never do it again or would suffer the consequences. I don't know what the consequenses would have been, but point being I never had to come up with any. It worked for me, worked for my kids, and I hope it works for their kids when the time comes. Too many pampering parents out there!!!! Kids need to know they have boundaries.

Mom should not have untied his hands from the bed post.
