Rusty- i don't think that is totally right- , "playing down" Timpview / East - even a hand full of other 4A teams would beat just about any 5A team except Bingham in a given year, it really depends on the year - It is all about the program and how it is built and managed. Look at De La salle who East beat this last year , they are a 3A California team and have won the national title before , and are ranked every year, Mt Crest / Box Elder would beat the 5A north teams at least every other year - I don't think it is like a D1 college team playing down. But i do agree with scheduling , and how that is a problem with region games and non region games... A good team is a good team to a extent - Now going too far down is a numbers game. But 5A and 4A top teams are pretty even in all----

Guess I'm late to this, but Bingham has not played down in classification since 1988. That is nearly 30 years of only playing teams from the largest classification in the state. Don't know why this has been the case as nearly every other team that was in the largest classification over the past 30 years has "played down". I'm guessing it is because they have nothing to gain (they should beat teams from smaller classifications) and everything to lose. Go look at the schedules and you'll see that every team they have played since they lost to Provo (a 3A school while Bingham was 4A) on Oct 14, 1988, was in the same classification as they were.

So maybe Bingham has been "dodging East", but not because they are afraid. It appears to be because of some internal decision or policy with the program. Bingham gave up rivalries over the years because of this decision (e.g., they quit playing Alta, when Corner Canyon opened and Alta moved to 4A).

Of course, that will change this year as they open the season with Orem, who I think is 4A in the new alignment.

I also love the Bingham Dodging east quote. People don't realize that teams schedules have to line up in order to play. Just because East calls Bingham and the game didn't line up people think they didn't want to play. Then they try to call out Bingham after the season. Said they didn't want to play because then east would be invited instead of Bingham to Texas. One of my best friends is on the Bingham staff and he said they got the call and official invite the day after they won the state championship. I think East thought they still had a chance to go or something because they took a while to announce it.

@adwight I was at the meeting the sticky point about DAvis joining Region 2 was travel. Unlike the other two schools Bingham, Timpview that cited the distance traveled to compete every week. Where Timpview and Bingham are relatively close to Salt Lake county and Utah County respectively Davis has considerable travel for each event.

I agree Westlake would practically need a miracle to gain a playoff spot, but that is why they play the games you never know.

@Husker1 Coach Matich asked lobbied several times for the 4A vs 5A champion even stating he wanted to play Bingham, instead Jordan signed up for the home and home series with East. Would East beat Bingham at that time most likely not with the exception of 2013 maybe they would have but they did call them out.

@eagle "There is also the factor that many in the Provo community wanted to see Timpview and Provo separated as the rivalry has become unhealthy generally and for most sports these days isn't much of a rivalry."

    You got that right!!

I know for a fact that the issue of 7 teams in Region 1 was brought before them. They didn't care, and decided to go along with it anyway. Sorry Westlake, good luck qualifying for playoffs with that insanely stacked Region 4. I still see most of the state championships coming out of region 4.

There are some awesome early season games. LP vs. Herriman week 1. Bingham East week 2. Should be a lot of fun!

I know it is hard enough to align regions - but if all possible , they should put at least 6 teams in the higher classification regions- 6A to 3A . It is tough for the 5 team regions to find non- league games. They have 4 region games an have to jockey to find 6 non- league games , so some have just used a bye week and play a 9 game schedule. But it looks like it turned out alright , and they change regions every 2 years now. Hopefully the 5 team regions have scheduled a home and home with the teams this year so they don't have to do it all again next yr .

Utah high school football is great - love it and i really think we have exceptional coaches in our high schools on the whole, it is a very tough job... We are putting out college players all over the nation now - (be nice to keep them all home , but hard to blame them)...Looking forward to another great year of UTAH H.S. FOOTBALL

    John Charity Spring:

To answer your question, Davis wanted to be in Region 1 to have less travel and stay with natural rivals, the UHSAA adjusted that region.

Husker1: I think there is the other factor that many schools in Region 8 are generally upset with Timpview. There has even been talk of boycotting them in football. So I think the UHSAA put them up in Region 7 not to deal with that possibility as there isn't the upset feelings with those schools as with the ones in Utah County. Also, Skyridge will be compete better in Region 8 and were given favoritism from the UHSAA. There is also the factor that many in the Provo community wanted to see Timpview and Provo separated as the rivalry has become unhealthy generally and for most sports these days isn't much of a rivalry. But Provo's football coach has no fear of Timpview and wants to embrace the challenge, however, I would suspect many other Provo High coaches, parents and possibly administrators, welcome this new alignment. Many Provo High teams will continue playing Timpview but it will be non-league and less contentious. But in other sports, the games won't happen at all and that will fine with most coaches.

How is it possible for Region 1 to have seven teams and Region 2 to have five. That creates the impression that the northern teams are being discriminated against.

@Right said Fred "Not really sure about what politics was involved the only objection Timpview offered in the meeting was the need to travel to Salt Lake County to play."

I've worked in Provo School District for many years so I know exactly what led to Timpview and Provo being separated. My statement in my previous post was rhetorical. Provo District is very political. It has two schools- the have's and the have not's- and the school board works very hard to keep the have's on top.

I'd be interested to see whatever concrete evidence you have that Bingham has been dodging East for years.

srsmith - there are a couple things in play here first student population is the first measuring stick. Second is desire to play at 6A like East petitioned to move up to 6A even though by population they were 5A. Second they tried to make each region as competitive as they could while still allowing schools to request moving regions for the sake of traditional rivalries. Although not all the teams got what they wanted most did or found compromises by scheduling rivals as non region play.

Something had to be done to address the differential between small 5A schools and large 5A schools the level of competition and participation should increase. Who really knows what will happen by the end of the season, but it will definitely be interesting to watch as the season progresses.

I'm trying to figure out how 5 teams makes a region and why there are now 6 classifications. Seems to water down the competition in all regions/classifications. Can anyone explain why this happened?

yes dodging East.. East has been trying to get games with Bingham for quite some time yet Bigham has continued to decline them. Now they aren't but they certainly did for years, East even asked to have the 4A champ play the 5A champ as they felt they were the better team. Same reason most top tier D1 schools refuse to play certain mid majors you have everything to lose. Imagine if you will if they played East and lost to the 2013 East squad with Ula Tolutau and Valles then many of the recruits you see now at Bingham decided to go to East, Alta, Jordan or Herriman instead. I mean I get it losing to Bishop Gorman, Christian Valor, or Aquinas you can shrug off saying hey they are always top in the nation we are still top in Utah. Lose to East you can no longer brag about it and that is why they dodged them for years.

Dodging East. If they were dodging East, why bother scheduling them week 2. They are not in the same region so Bingham does not have to play them, unless they run into each other in the playoffs. So Bingham will schedule Christian Valor, Aquinas, Gorman, but will dodge East. That does not make sense.

    Husker,

There are pretty tough games throughout 5A and 6A this season Bingham will finally have to play East after dodging them for years. East had a pretty good home and home series against Jordan a few years back so they are a more than capable team at 6A. Region 3 will be a dog fight as usual for 2nd place East should be 1st easily. Region 4 Lone Peak and Bingham fight it out for 1st Bingham has the edge there. Region 7 is easily the toughest region in 5A with Alta, Brighton, Corner Canyon, Jordan and Timpview all fighting for 4 playoff spots. Will be interesting to see what happens there with Jordan having a new coach and Kjar to CCHS.

Not really sure about what politics was involved the only objection Timpview offered in the meeting was the need to travel to Salt Lake County to play. The concession to most who wanted to play traditional rivals after the changes was to play in non-region games which from the looks of it happened.

I have to give props to East for starting their season against Timpview, Bingham, and Arizona power Saguaro. Then they end the season against IMG Academy. Wow.

It's sad that Provo and Timpview, the only two programs in Provo City School District, were put in different regions. I sense some politics behind this decision. Glad they are still playing as non-region foes.
