Got to question the validity of this article .

It appears that more people are being raised in single parent homes then ever before in American history.

It depends on what your definition of "cheating" is.

One conclusion that might possibly be drawn from this study is that older Americans believe that they are doing something wrong by having sex outside of marriage, while younger Americans see nothing wrong with cohabitation without marriage.

Without an in-depth understanding of how this survey was conducted, it's hard for me to take it seriously.

Ever since Bill Clinton, the definition of what is and is not sex has been turned on its head.

Additionally, the vast majority of Americans under 40 or 50 would say it is impossible to have sex outside of marriage if you are not married. Cohabitation without marriage (or at least prior to marriage) has become normal to the vast majority of Americans under 50.

I question whether the data supports the conclusions. The survey question only asked whether the individuals had ever had extramarital sex. The flings could have occurred 30 years previously. The data does not support the conclusion that older couples are currently having more affairs, only that older individuals, having lived more years over which an affair could have occurred, report having had a least one extramarital affair.

How sad for those of us in the older cohort.

This is comparing apples and oranges. The young have not yet reached the age where they are confronted with their aging and mortality and are grasping at anything to make them feel young again. Simply put, the young have not yet reached the cheating age. Measure their actions in 30 years.

    @worf

Another way to spin it would be to say younger people are making less hasty decisions about when and whom to marry.

It doesn't matter any which way you put it whether on charts, surveys, different generations, etc...cheating is cheating. It has to be one of the most extremely worst poor excuse of all times. I DO NOT believe in mid-life crisis either. I feel very strongly that is the most childish excuse I have ever heard. Cheating is cheating I don't care how old you are, it wrong wrong wrong. Tell me something when the day comes, how will you explain yourself to our Father in Heaven when you have cheated on someone, especially when they are suppose to be your eternal companion? Good luck with that one.

Does the government pay for the medical treatment of people who get STDs? If a person had to pay for his/her own STE treatment, he/she may be less likely to engage in extramarital sex.

it would appearthis action to be a bad choice because commitment to correct ideas has fallen all the way to the bottom

Next time your parents tell you how much better their generation was you can show them this study.

Younger Americans don't get married. They sleep with anyone and everyone every other weekend. Sometimes it's a few people on the weekend. Sometimes it's... well, we won't go down that road.

Not really sure you can compare generations.

Human history 101: One righteous generation can happen, but then children must outsmart their foolish parents, and again and again until destruction.

Social media makes cheating more possible. It's escapism from dreary, unfulfilling lives.

["have you ever had sex with someone other than your husband or wife while you were married?"

There wasn't much difference based on age in the answers until around 2004. He said that's when Americans in their mid-50s and 60s started reporting rates of extramarital sex that were roughly 5 to 6 percentage points higher than those of younger adults.]

Well wait a minute... this is a "have you ever", it doesn't ask if you're currently doing that. So in the earlier part of the chart where the 18-54 year olds are reporting at an 18% clip, at some point when that demographic gets old that percentage would transfer over to the elderly portion even if as old people there aren't new people cheating.

As for the declining rate among the younger population. The question does talk about cheating on a spouse. Does this study take into account the declining marriage rates?

Without commitment there is no cheating.

IMO, there's less people getting married, and many are confused as to what gender they are.

Younger Americans have so much more to do than we did in the 70's.

They have TV games, computer games, DVD rentals AND cable TV!

All we had was corn growing and cold showers.
